How to qualify for the

2008 UK Octathalon Championships

Everyone now has the chance to get into the championships this year. Just complete the course as fast as you can in your own gym, get a gym instructor or personal trainer to verify that time and then complete and email us the form below. We will then let you know how successful you are on the 19th July. For more details read on. Another way to qualify is to attend one of the qualifier events that we will be putting on. The first one is detailed below.

1st TIME TRIAL QUALIFIER BEING HELD

AT
FITNESS FIRST GYM GORTON MANCHESTER

13th July 2008

2nd TIME TRIAL QUALIFIER BEING HELD

AT

FITNESS FIRST SWINDON WEST

10th August 2008

TIME TRIAL CLUB TEAM EVENT

Both these time trials will have clubs competing as teams. If you would like to enter a team from your club, you need 5 people to each compete as individuals. There must be one woman in the team with everyone doing the Club course and one male who must do the Cup course. The winning team is decided by totalling up all the individuals finishing positions. Just notify us on your application forms if you want to be entered as part of a team. If you would like to enter a team from your club at one of our time trials please contact us quickly.

The Qualification Process

No cost in attempting to qualify for the event
Before the 19th July you can submit as many times as you want without cost. After July 19th, if you are not one of the fastest times, we will notify you and you will get a chance to put in a faster time. This will now cost you £10 for each time you submit of which the first payment is discounted if you go on to be successful at entering the event by having a fast enough qualifying time.

Time Trials

We will also be running time trial qualifiers as another way you can attempt to get into the championships. Currently there is one arranged at Fitness First Gorton on the 13th July and another at Fitness First Swindon West on 10th August. Entry is only £10. You will need to send in your fee and application form as soon as possible to get into these as there are limited places.

Media advertising
This year’s Octathalon Championships are being advertised in many areas of the media and because of that we are looking to attract competitors from all sports. Depending on the available number of places in your selected event, invitations will then be sent out to those applicants who have achieved a fast enough time.

Verification procedure
We will have in place a verification procedure to ensure that all the submitted qualifying times are genuine. Each applicant will need to run through their course in their own gym under the eyes of a gym instructor or personal trainer in that gym. We reserve the right, at any time before the final invitations are sent out, to contact that personal trainer to ask for more details of your qualified time and the equipment that was used. We also reserve the right for one of our affiliate Octathalon Trainers to come to that gym and to witness a run through of the course by the applicant, for which we will give you sufficient advance notice in order to prepare yourself for that.

Fair and equal time comparisons
We appreciate that gyms have different manufacturers equipment and differing calibrations can mean faster times are achievable in some gyms than others. We also know that due to the layout of some of the equipment in some gyms it takes longer to move from one piece of equipment to another. We are happy to take this into consideration if you mention this in your application and it is substantiated by your witness. If you are able to run from one piece of equipment to another and it takes longer than 5 seconds, we will allow you to take off any time taken that is longer than 5 seconds for that particular transition. If you have to walk between exercise stations that are too far apart, then the actual time taken must stand and no time saving will be allowed. If you put down the make & model of equipment you used in the gym, we are also able to make appropriate time comparisons in order to make an adjusted time that may enable you to qualify. This may also work in reverse if your equipment is calibrated in such a way that it is far quicker than normal. For example with some manufacturer’s makes of bike it can take you around 1 min to do 1 km, when we know that other makes of bikes take around 1 min 50s when using the same amount of effort.

2nd Chance
If you have still not managed to be in a qualifying position by the above date, you will be informed by email and have the opportunity to try again. This will cost you £10 which would only be refunded if you are successful at qualifying for the event.

Early qualification gain financial advantage
There is also an incentive to getting your application form in early. The date of your first application received by us will determine your actual cost to enter the event should you be successful in qualifying. Therefore if you leave it to the last minute to submit a qualifying time, you will be charged the maximum amount of entry fee. Those successful at qualifying will have a deadline in which to accept the invitation and pay their entry fee. If they fail to do so, their places will be given to the reserves – those applicants who narrowly missed out with their times not being quite fast enough.

Individual Entry Fees are as follows:-

£30 if you applied to qualify before the 19th July
£40 if you applied to qualify before the 16th August
£50 if you applied to qualify before the 30th August

Pairs entry fees are:-

£40 if you applied to qualify before the 19th July
£50 if you applied to qualify before the 16th August
£60 if you applied to qualify before the 30th August

Prizes announced
We are preparing for a wide variety of prizes to be won from Cash, Cups and medals to prizes from sponsors. We will inform you more about these in detail in the coming months with the first major announcements to put up on the website after the 16th July. More will be announced after the 16th August and the final list will be put up Mid September.

Pre-Qualified places & Wild Cards
For competitors who did the event last year there places kept open for the finalists in the Men’s and Women’s Open and the winners of the Men’s and Women’s Pairs events. If any of these people wish to take up their place, they need to get the entry form and entry fee to us before the deadline below. We also hold a couple of Wild Card entry slots. If you wish to be considered for one of these places at any time you will need to contact us separately giving your reasons why we should consider you for a wild card entry.

Past times advantage
If you competed in the Octathalon event last year, you have one advantage over all the other applicants in that you can submit that time if you wish as your qualifying time and we would not go through any checking procedure to verify that time. Alternatively you could try and submit a faster time to give you a greater chance of qualifying.
